jancieJancie is a little less than one year old, with all of the energy of the young girl that she is!

She's a boxer mix, with lots of love to give.

The kids in the juvenile detention center New Leash on Life program have taught her that hands mean loving and treats. She's also learned how to walk nicely on the leash, sit, stay, come when called, and she's also learning a few tricks (rollover and high five are a big favorite of the kids).

She is good with kids and other dogs, and really wants to be a part of your loving family. (Can't say how she is with cats as they are not yet participants in New Leash on Life).

RockyLil' Rocky is a 1-2 year old border collie mix. He's a bit little, maybe 35 pounds.

He's all border collie in action and temperament.

Rocky is wicked smart, just like the others, very playful, full of energy, and adored.

Rock is learning to dig under the fence and had to be chased for 1.5 hours yesterday by the JDC staff to get him back 'home.'

Jen thinks the kids secretly taught him that one...

LeroyLeroy is a 3-4 year old black lab mix.

He's strong and beautiful. He's filling out very nicely and getting shiny. Leroy is a hunter all the way.

Last night when he saw a fat bunny on the other side of the fence, he actually went into a pointing stance.

He's very, very, very sweet and compliant with the kids. He's learning quickly -- last night he went from jumping up to sitting on command in an hour.

He's a bit aggressive at first with other dogs, but never hurts them. He's also getting over that, now that he knows them but he will likely always have some of that as he got fixed a bit late in life.

He'll be the most wonderful companion and protector -- he did have a terribly fear of humans that the kids are melting out of his psyche as we speak.

I'd say he weighs at least 65lbs, and will fill out to about 75 when he's back up to weight.

Lightning

LightningLightening is a small, fixed, male border-collie mix who's probably at least a year old. Lightening was found by a LaPAW volunteer, Sheila Gilley, in early spring.

He was a stray in her neighborhood and craftily, in a frightened way, avoided getting near humans for a very long time before she was able to lure him to her with food. He was still scared to let people come close to him. Any sudden movements and he'd jump 20' in a flash to get away. He never snapped, growled, did anything dangerous toward humans, he just didn't want to be near them in case they meant him harm.

We got him into New Leash on Life at the JDC, and he was doing phenomenally well -- until the storms started. On the day that we did a practice run for his CGC test, the last part of the test, which is reaction to sudden noise, really jolted him. Everything else he was fine with. He was cuddling with the kids, interacting and playing with the other dogs, finally even getting used to walking on the leash.
