Pet Therapy at work with other organizations
Very Special Arts Festival

Many of our pet therapy dogs also participate at the Calcasieu Parish School Board Very Special Arts Fest each Spring.

School children with exceptionalities attend this celebration and look for the dogs each year.

The photos that follow are from the April 2nd, 2008 event which was held at Burton Coliseum.

The Juvenile Detention Center

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7:30pm our volunteers help teach the kids involved in the New Leash on Life project how to train their dogs, care for them and keep them healthy, so that their dogs can graduate and then get adopted into the loving families they deserve.

The second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30pm therapy dogs visit with all of the residents, and guest speakers will offer information on dog care, careers with animals, training, and other topics related to the animal-human bond.

Women's Shelter

The 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 5:30pm to 6:30pm – allows the kids at the shelter to feel like kids for an hour. They can run and play with the dogs all they like.

The Whistle Stop Supervised Visitation Center

Supervised visitation center where families who have been torn apart by abuse can begin to rebuild their relationships in safe, neutral environment.

Every other Saturday from 12:15pm to about 2:15pm – helping families torn apart by abuse, neglect, and abandonment heal in a supervised setting.

The dogs offer a focal point for families needing to reconnect, and help ease tensions.
