Local chapter offers more effective alternatives to "breed banning"
LAKE CHARLES, LA. Breed-specific legislation has increased in Southwest Louisiana greatly following several local pit bull attacks. Although the Humane Society of Louisiana’s Southwest Louisiana Chapter recognizes that some individual dogs may be considered aggressive, it reiterates the belief of other animal welfare organizations and animal behavior experts that breed-specific legislation is not the most effective avenue to stop violence by animals.
Even if lawmakers were successful in euthanizing every pit bull in Southwest Louisiana, that does not get to the root of the problem, according to chapter secretary Beth Zilbert.
